The course begins with a thorough overview of the definition of pain/chronic pain and on how the brain processes neurophysiological pain. In depth lecture and material will provide the information necessary to understand how to develop an appropriate patient assessment plan utilizing evidence based pain assessment tools. In addition to providing information to assist with the understanding of the resources available for therapeutic treatment options.
The instructor will discuss the importance of incorporating manual, cognitive and movement skills into a successful chronic pain program. The techniques to manipulate the neurologic response, decrease the perception of pain, change tissue tone, prepare the tissue for movement and improve normal movement patterns will include: dermatome stroking, mechanoreceptor stimulation/inhibition, postural muscle bending, myofascial release, rhythmic traction, rhythmic stabilization and acupressure .
Inhibition techniques, trigger point and soft tissue work will provide the clinician with hand on skills to positively affect the sympathetic nervous system. Mind/body visualization exercises will give the clinician more tools to assist the patient with decreasing the firing of the nervous system. Manual skills taught in this class are all followed up with functional training activities to assist p the patient in maintaining their positive gains made with their manual therapy sessions.
Techniques for behavioral and cognitive therapy to train healthy neuroplasticity will include: Controlled breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, mindful visualization, body imprinting add body scan relaxation.
In conclusion in conclusion therapeutic sensory stimulation exercises such as exertion reduced exercises, to include standing, chair mat activities in addition to modified Yoga and Tai Chi for the chronic pain patient will effectively move the patient to ownership of progress and a more healthier functional state.
